OUR VISION
Overall, 71%
of the northeastern United States is covered in forest. That’s great, right?
NOT QUITE.
Less than one-third (only 27%) of the forest is permanently conserved, leaving millions of acres at risk of future development.
At the current rate, we could lose nearly
800,000 ACRES
of forest to development in the next 20 years. That’s the size of Rhode Island!
If we don’t permanently protect more forests in our region and restore more natural lands in nature-deprived neighborhoods, we may lose this opportunity forever.
When we lose forests to development, we lose our ability to:
- Protect ourselves and our communities from the impacts of a changing climate
- Enjoy the essential health benefits that forests provide
- Reverse chronic and systemic health problems in nature-deprived neighborhoods
- Create thriving communities and economies
